Regional Introduction

Tromsø is the largest city and an important port in northern Norway. Located within the Arctic Circle, it is known as the "Gateway to the Arctic." Influenced by the Gulf Stream, the city remains ice-free in winter, making it an ideal destination for viewing the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Tromsø’s highlights include the Arctic Cathedral with its unique architecture, the culturally rich wooden houses in the city center, and a variety of outdoor activities such as polar expeditions and interactions with Arctic animals.

Polaria is a unique Arctic aquarium located in Tromsø. Its architectural appearance resembles floating ice, and the aquarium offers interactive and educational experiences themed around Arctic wildlife.

There’s an underwater tunnel in the aquarium where you can clearly watch the activities of every seal underwater.They’re especially cute when they swim over your head and get close to you.This is the closest I’ve ever been to seals in my life.

The aquarium also displays many unique marine creatures that can only be found in the Arctic Circle. There’s also a touch tank where you can feel some gentle shallow-water organisms.Watching these fish and jellyfish drift around is incredibly relaxing.

Polaria Aquarium: Seal Feeding Show

A highlight of any visit to Polaria, the daily Seal Feeding Show offers a delightful mix of entertainment and education—perfect for travelers of all ages.

During the 15-20 minute session, visitors get front-row views of Polaria’s resident seals (such as playful harbor seals) as they swim, leap, and eagerly interact with trainers to catch their meals. Trainers share fun, easy-to-follow facts about the seals’ diet (think fresh Arctic fish!), natural behaviors in the wild, and how the aquarium supports Arctic marine conservation.

What makes it extra special? The seals’ curious, energetic personalities—they often “wave” or glide close to the glass to greet the crowd, creating heartwarming moments that are great for photos. It’s not just a feeding; it’s a chance to connect with these charming Arctic creatures and learn why protecting their habitat matters.

Check the aquarium’s daily schedule upon arrival—shows run multiple times a day, and no extra tickets are needed (included with general admission)!

On our first day in Oslo, we chose to take a SAS domestic flight directly to Tromsø, the northernmost city, with a flight time of approximately one hour and fifty minutes.
